Years ago, UK dentists warned that without reform of their contract, they would be increasingly unable to afford to provide NHS services. In parts of the country it has become almost impossible to register for NHS dentistry. We are now back at the point where many people either go without or attempt do-it-yourself dentistry. The impact on the UK population has been hugely damaging.

Now GPs are warning of the same thing. And if GP services go the way of dentistry, the impact on the health of the population will be even more severe. We cannot afford to let that happen.

Please ask your MP to support Ian Byrne’s Early Day Motion in Parliament, which calls on the Government to ‘address the concerns of GPs and ensure the future of general practice in England as a comprehensive service available to all free at the point of need.’

PROTECTING NHS GP SERVICES

As you know, NHS dentistry is in crisis. In many parts of the country, it has become almost impossible to obtain dental services on the NHS. And the impact on the nation’s dental health has been severe.

Now a similar risk exists in relation to NHS GP services. As dentists warned years ago, GPs are now warning that it is becoming increasingly difficult for them to continue to provide services on the NHS. Following the passing of a resolution at UK LMC Conference 2026 that called for the consideration of a means-tested, subscription-based service, such as those being offered currently by NHS dentists, the British Medical Association GP Committee for England has decided to ballot GPs on an alternative strategy for general practice, allowing GPs greater freedom to provide private services to their patients. There is a real risk of GP services going the way of dental services.

Ian Byrne MP has put down an Early Day Motion, EDM329, which calls on the Government to address the concerns of GPs and ensure the future of general practice in England as a comprehensive service available to all free at the point of need.
