Next week, we have a briefing for MPs. The Budget is due on 26 November and will determine the funding for the NHS; and the government’s 10-year plan, Fit for the Future, has set out how the government intends to use the money. Our briefing is critically important for MPs: it will give them the facts and figures they need to understand what is happening, what the likely results are, and what needs to change for the NHS to remain viable.

Please email your MP to make sure they attend. Despite appearances, MPs do take note of emails from constituents – especially if they get several on one topic.

If you have never written to your MP before, don’t worry, these notes make it very quick and easy – it should take you less than five minutes and the only thing you need to know is your own address:

  • Introduce yourself as a constituent – and if you have never written before, say so: the fact that people other than ‘the usual suspects’ are writing to them concentrates an MP’s mind;
  • Be polite – don’t give them a reason to ignore the letter;
  • Keep focussed so they cannot dodge the issue, and keep it very brief – the shorter the better;
  • Be specific about the action you expect the MP to take – in this case, just ask them to attend the event. You could use a version of the text in italics below.

I would like you to attend an important event in Parliament to protect my interests as a constituent. On Tuesday 11 November, please attend the meeting Richard Burgon is hosting on the government’s 10-year plan for the NHS, and what needs to be done to make it succeed. I believe you have already received an invitation.

Writing to them is easy. This website will find all the details you need and even send your email for you: https://www.writetothem.com/ You only need to know your own post-code!

All you need to do is to prepare the text of your email and paste it in.
